A local search party group out of Nogales, Mexico, began searching for Nancy Guthrie this week after fielding an anonymous tip about her remains being buried in the Mariposa area near the Arizona-Mexico border.
The tip and subsequent search party for Guthrie’s remains comes more than four months after she was abducted from her home outside Tuscon, Arizona, on Feb. 1. The abduction of Guthrie, the mother of Today host Savannah Guthrie, has sparked national questions and a massive investigation, with the search effort now spreading internationally into Mexico.

The search in Mariposa currently appears to be independent of the country’s government, as the private group Buscando Corazones Nogales, which specializes in missing-person searches, is in charge, according to multiple reports.
Ramona Guadalupe Ayala Ortiz, the leader of the volunteer search collective, announced that the group had received the anonymous tip, which said Guthrie’s body was buried in a grave near a stream in Mariposa, according to Sonora-based newspaper El Imparcial.
“We are aware of reports regarding an anonymous tip related to the Nancy Guthrie investigation that was provided to a group in Mexico. At this time, we have not been contacted by Mexican authorities,” the Pima County Sheriff’s office, which has been largely coordinating the investigation into Guthrie’s abduction in the U.S., said in a statement on X.
Ayala Ortiz said her group conducted a first search of the area that was unsuccessful, but vowed that the collective will continue conducting searches for Guthrie’s body in the region, the local outlet said. The report also noted that the group found over 25 secret graves between April and May 2025 in the same region where the tip said Guthrie’s grave is located.
“This investigation remains active and ongoing, and we will continue to follow up on any credible information,” the Pima County Sheriff’s office said.
Savannah Guthrie, who returned to her job at the Today show in late March after a monthslong hiatus, posted on Instagram on Mother’s Day a message asking for people to continue to keep praying for her mother and contact the FBI if they have any information.

Savannah Guthrie and her siblings are offering a reward of $1 million for anyone who can help provide information on how to find their mother. Nancy Guthrie was 84 years old at the time of her disappearance.
