Two people were injured after a car ploughed into a bus stop queue leaving devastation in its wake in north London.

Passengers on the morning school run and commute ‘ran for their lives’ after a black Ford Focus smashed into the stop before flipping onto its roof.

Witnesses described how the car came careering round a slight bend on a fast stretch of the North Circular at just before 8am.

Rico Kwame told Metro: ‘People ran for their lives when they saw the car coming. The car came quickly, this is a terrible stretch of the road everyone goes very fast and there is a slight bend.

‘It hit the bus stop and caused carnage. The ambulances came and two people looked as if they were injured. The driver of the car got out and even though it had flipped over they seemed physically ok but maybe in shock, it was carnage. The bus stop was completely wiped out.

Police and ambulances were scrambled to the scene and part of the North Circular closed as paramedics treated the injured.

They are appealing for witnesses and carrying out tests to assess how fast the car was travelling.

The incident caused huge rush hour tailbacks on the busy stretch of the road heading towards central London.

A mum-of-two who lives near the accident scene said: ‘School kids use that stop including my children sometimes, it’s peak time to get to school or work.

‘Everybody scattered when the car came towards them there were a lot of people who looked in shock and two people looked injured. That stretch of road is a death trap. It’s no place for a bus stop to be honest. There was another accident there just two days ago.’

Images from the immediate aftermath show the Ford Focus on its side with the bus shelter left a mangled wreck.
