Former President Donald Trump wished Elon Musk the best with his purchase of Twitter but emphasized that he would stick with his social network, Truth Social.

Trump praised Musk for his $44 billion deal to acquire Twitter and said he liked the billionaire but said he was uncertain if the company could succeed without him there. Musk finalized his acquisition of Twitter on Thursday and immediately moved to fire several executives and raised expectations that he would reinstate users who had received permanent bans, including the former president. Trump, though, said he would stick with his own company.

“I am staying on Truth. I like it better, I like the way it works, I like Elon, but I’m staying on Truth,” Trump told Fox Business.

Musk had stated that he would allow the former president back on the platform. “I do think it was not correct to ban Donald Trump, I think that was a mistake,” he said back in May. “I would reverse the perma-ban. … But my opinion, and Jack Dorsey, I want to be clear, shares this opinion, is that we should not have perma-bans.”

“I am very happy that Twitter is now in sane hands and will no longer be run by Radical Left Lunatics and Maniacs that truly hate our country. Twitter must now work hard to rid itself of all of the bots and fake accounts that have hurt it so badly. It will be much smaller but better,” the former president said in a post on Truth Social.

Trump was banned from Twitter after the Jan. 6 riot for his involvement in the incitement of violence. The former president moved to form his social network in Oct. 2021 and launched the app in February. While the platform saw an early surge of interest in the first month, Truth Social has struggled to maintain user growth month-over-month. It also faces several financial struggles, including unpaid bills and uncertainty among its investors.

Musk’s acquisition of Twitter comes after months of legal tension. Musk initially offered to buy the company in April, only to terminate the deal in July over allegations of too many spam bots. Twitter filed suit to force Musk to uphold the original price, leading to various legal spats in the Delaware Court of Chancery. Musk relented in early October, agreeing to uphold the original price.
