Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) said she does not think President Joe Biden will run for reelection in 2024, while her opponent, fellow Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY), gave a noncommittal answer.
Their comments in a Tuesday primary debate join those of a growing number of Democrats who have either openly or subtly suggested that Biden not run again. Maloney and Nadler, both veteran New York representatives, are running for reelection in the same district due to redistricting.

“Too early to say. It doesn’t serve the purpose of the Democratic Party to deal with that until after the midterms,” Nadler said in response to the same question.
Their younger opponent, Suraj Patel, gave a hearty yes on Biden’s 2024 prospects.
Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) made headlines last week as the first Democrat to say he would not support Biden in 2024. His colleague Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN) agreed with him Tuesday, saying that “new leadership” is needed in Washington, D.C.
“I think Dean Phillips and I are in lockstep and alignment with that, and I’m going to do everything in my power as a member of Congress to make sure that we have a new generation of leadership,” she said at a congressional forum in Minnesota.

Phillips cited Biden’s age as the main factor for not supporting him for reelection.
“I have respect for Joe Biden. I think he has, despite some mistakes and missteps, despite his age, I think he’s a man of decency, of good principle, of compassion, of empathy, and of strength,” he added during a radio interview when asked if Biden should run. “But to answer your question directly, which I know is quite rare, no, I don’t.”
